Dnd Continuing Abjurant Champion Past Level 5
- #1
So, I've been planning on making a character with the Abjurant Champion prestige class from Complete Mage. To qualify, I was thinking about combining wizard (for the spellcasting requirements) with swashbuckler (for the BAB). The swashbuckler also has the Insightful Strike ability, which is nice when INT is your best stat. After I've taken Abjurant Champion up to five levels, I've been thinking of adding things like Elf Paragon (mostly because of the INT bonus) and Eldritch Knight (for the full BAB combined with the almost-full spellcasting). The final product would look something like Abjurant Champion 5/Eldritch knight 6/Elf Paragon 3/Swashbuckler 4/Wizard 2, have a BAB of +18 at level 20 and the same average amount of HP as a cleric of the same level (multiclassing madness, I know).
With this build, I'm hoping that I won't have to place a very high score in Strength, since it will not be necessary to use it to deal damage or run around wearing armour. This will allow me to place a decent score in CHA, which is a pure roleplaying priority -- I like playing characters with good social skills. Since I'm taking Elf Paragon, I'm obviously planning to play an elf. So, any ideas for how to make this build shine? Spot any pitfalls or shortcomings? Any good ideas for feats?

Never give up more caster levels when you have to. Insightful Strike just isn't worth it.
Fighter 1/Wizard 6/Spellsword 1/Abjurant Champion 5/Eldritch Knight 7 is probably your best bet. Swap the Spellsword level out for EK 8 if you want. Pick Diviner, Conjurer, Transmuter, or Abjurer as your specialization. I like to go with Diviner; that way you only lose one spell school (evocation, of course), since with the Spell Compendium, there's enough good Divination spells that you can fill those bonus slots with good spells, most of which you'd want to memorize anyway.
Spellcasting is so much better than anything else in the game that giving up CLs is a big no-no. That gets BAB +17 and CL 18 with 9th level spells.
You will want a high strength--even if you had Insightful Strike, STR > INT for damage, because of the 1.5x multiplier for two-handed weapons and the fact that Insightful Strike only works on sneak-attackable things--with INT as your first priority (if you want to be a caster first and a warrior second).

also, the additional feats or class abilities (notably Weapon Specialization or Insightful Strike to compliment the class's defense with some offensive bite) are well worth the loss in additional spellcasting.
You'd give up a spellcasting level to get Weapon Specialization? I wouldn't. There are spells that do the same, but much better. Things like Blade of Blood, Energy Surge, etc. boost your damage by more than a measly +2 for a couple low level slots, of which you'd have more if you take the spellcasting level over WS.
be sure to take Practiced Spellcaster to make your fewer spell slots last longer, though, or else your Mage Armors (if you choose to use them) will not last long enough to be able to have them cast before combat starts,
Practised Spellcaster is useless in the long run to an Abjurant Champion: any non-spellcasting classes you take should be boosting your BAB, so when 5th level of Abjurant Champion sets your Caster level equal to your BAB, Practised Spellcaster would be redundant. I'd only take it if the GM allowed it to be retrained out or if I was pretty sure the game would never hit high enough level for me to be a 5th level Abj Champion.
And the mention of Mage Armor reminds me: talk with your GM about if the Abjurant Armor ability applies to Mage Armor. It's used in the example repeatedly, but Mage Armor isn't an abjuration spell (it's conjuration), so the ability shouldn't work on it. A lenient GM may allow it to apply to Mage Armor, but you may need to hunt down abjuration school armor bonuses in supplements (IIRC there's a beefed up Mage Armor in the Book of Exalted Deeds).
And what level are you starting actual play at? Combo characters like Mystic Theurges, Arcane Tricksters and Abjurant Champions are pretty weak early on, especially before their combo PrC kicks in. You may want to shore up early effectiveness, if starting at low level.
